This is an intensive reentry program for women leaving prison. The One Woman at a Time program is our principal program, and mainly what we do at Redeem-Her. It uses a two-prong approach in facilitating success for women leaving prison in New Jersey. First, we recognize women do not succeed at recovery, reentry (or both), alone. A support system is essential; the most effective consists of other women who have experienced the same ordeals. Even if every tangible need is met, without intimate contact with a supportive network it is nearly impossible for a reentering and/or recovering woman to maintain all of the life changes necessary.

However, a support system alone is not enough for sustained success if tangible needs are not met efficiently, effectively and immediately. Our second prong is the social service component focusing on a holistic approach as opposed to providing a singular service. A reentering woman can investigate the assistance that is available to her through the Board of Social Services, churches, prison ministries, and various community organizations. Then Redeem-Her helps each woman assess the value and practicality of what is offered, figure out how to put the pieces together into a personalized reentry plan that works, and then fill in the blanks of any critical components that may be missing.

One Woman At A Time

How We Do It

Provides complete clothing wardrobes and needed personal hygiene products to women released directly from prison to the community or from prison to state-funded or private halfway houses.  In 2007, we served an average of 40 women every month.  This program has operated since October of 2004, serving over 500 women. Your Closet also serves as a vital component of our reentry program in that it allows us to meet all of the clothing needs of our participants immediately and efficiently.

Your Closet

Simple But Classy Websites

An annual reconciliation project where the women of Redeem-Her provide stamped, blank holiday cards to incarcerated women to send to their family members.  Each pack of cards comes with a small bulletin talking about the importance of family restoration offering encouragement and helpful tips as to how to begin the process of repairing broken familial relationships. A holiday card provides a neutral, non-confrontational tool to begin the process.  Last year 1,425 stamped cards were provided.

Christmas Comes to Prison, Too

A program that initially interacts with children of incarcerated women in order to provide Christmas gifts.  This initial contact is used to establish rapport and build trust with the families so that they can be served in other ways. Long after Christmas, Children of Promise participants have received new eyeglasses, weeks at summer camp, bunk beds, afterschool tutoring, speech therapy and counseling.
